Scan

There are three basic steps to the scan process. They include:
  • Select registry items to be scanned
  • Start the scanning process
  • Select Fix Errors which will clean the registry and boost performance
Step 1: Select Items and Start the Scan

  1. To begin a scan, first select the items you would like to scan

    • √ in box = scan item
    • X in box = do not scan item

  2. Click the Start Scan button
Registry Items Explained:

Title Description
COM/ActiveX Entries Windows Registry includes a COM/ActiveX section which may have invalid entries that can cause application failure, system crashes, or errors when opening documents.
Uninstall Entries Windows Registry includes an Uninstall Entries section which may have invalid entries or point to one or more missing entries. Usually this is caused by incorrectly installing or uninstalling programs and applications.
Font Entries Windows Registry includes a Font section which may include one or more missing font files that can cause errors in applications (for example, Word processing applications).
Shared DLLs Windows Registry includes a Shared DLLs section which may contain invalid entries that cause application failure due to DLL conflict.
Application Paths Windows Registry includes an Application Paths section which may include invalid disk directories that can cause application failure and result in a crashed computer.
Help Files Information Windows Registry includes Help Files which may point to invalid help files that can cause application help files to open incorrectly.
Windows Startup Items Windows Registry includes a Run section which may contain missing program entries that can be caused by incorrectly installing or uninstalling of an application.
File/Path References Some registry issues may be linked to files that don’t exist and folders that are temporary files and are used for storage.
Program Shortcuts Program shortcuts with a ".ink" extension, may no longer be linked to an application.
Empty Registry Keys Registry keys may be empty which means they have no associated value.
File Associations Windows Registry includes a File Associations section which may contain invalid file associations. When files are associated with programs that don’t exist they show up as an irregularity.
History Depending on your computer settings, it may be storing history for deleted programs. Doing this uses unnecessary resources to store information.
Program Associations The Windows Registry often includes invalid software links or entries. Managing these entries can free up computer resources and increase computer speed.
System Drivers This portion of your registry can contain links to invalid or corrupt driver entries such as printers, thumb drives, storage devices, etc.
Firewall Rules Windows OS contains built-in a firewall settings/rules that overtime can contain invalid or unnecessary registry entries.

Step 2: Scan and Display

RegDefense scans the selected items and displays the number of errors associated with each item. You can return to step 1 by selecting the Back button and change the scan request or continue by selecting the Next button.

Step 3: Error Selected for Repair

By selecting the Next button you will be able to view specific errors which you can choose to fix or ignore. You can ignore the error item found and not correct it by deselecting the check box. To view the details of the error item, select +. From here you can decide which specific error items you wish to fix or ignore. If you do not want to fix the specific error either deselect the check mark or select the ignore link at the end of each explanation.
Settings

You are able to control and configure RegDefense which allows you to automate the functionality each time RegDefense is used. In other words, you are able to set up RegDefense to perform the functionality and processes you want it to perform with a one-time set-up; then you can set RegDefense to perform at a specific day and time. These areas include:
  1. General Settings

    a. Shutdown after repair
    b. Automatically repair items after scanning
    c. Create a system restore point before repairing errors
    d. Check for updates automatically
    e. Prompt me before downloading the updates

  2. Scheduling

    a. Schedule RegDefense to perform the functionality listed above when you would like – daily, weekly, monthly, etc.
You may also choose the functionality and areas that you would like RegDefense to ignore during a scan and repair. This is done by setting rules under the Ignore List tab.

Backup & Restore

Every time you use RegDefense to remove registry items a backup file is created. RegDefense saves these backups so you can restore the items that were removed from the registry.

To restore one or more backup files:

  1. Click the Backup button in the Main window
  2. Select the desired backup file/date.
  3. Click the Restore button.
Because RegDefense creates a backup each time you use it you may end up with a large number of backups.

To remove one or more backup files:

  1. Click the Backup button in the Main window.
  2. Select the desired backup file/date.
  3. Click the Remove button.
Recommendation: We recommend that you use caution when restoring the registry as it can affect the functionality of your software. Use this feature only when you need to restore to a previous working state.

Manage Startup

You can use RegDefense to select which applications are launched upon startup when starting your computer. The Manage Startup tool is similar in it’s functionality to the Windows System Configuration Utility. The RegDefense Manage Startup tool allows you to improve your computers startup speed by choosing only the programs you want to launch when you start your computer. A list of the programs that are launched upon startup of your computer are displayed.

Recommendation: We recommend that you use caution when re-configuring the startup entries. As a precaution, you can disable an item and see how the change will affect the functioning of your computer before you decide to remove it.

To disable a program:

  1. Select a program that is listed as enabled under the status column.
  2. Click the Disable Selected button.
To enable a disabled program:

  1. Select the program you wish to enable that is listed as disabled under the Status column.
  2. Click the Enable Selected button. (This button toggles as the Disable Selected button.)
To disable all programs:

Click the Disable All button. (Notice under the Status column that all programs are disabled.)

To enable all the programs:

Click the Enable All button. (Notice under the Status column that all programs are enabled.)

Remove Startup Program

You can permanently remove a program(s) from the startup list so they will be removed from running at startup and will no longer appear in the Startup list.

  1. Select the desired program from those listed under the Program column.
  2. 2. Click the Remove Selected button.
Warning: Once you remove a selected program from the Manage Startup list you cannot restore the program to open when your computer starts up through RegDefense. To restore the program to open when your computer starts up you will need to review the startup options of the particular program you removed. Only use the Remove Selected button if you are confident removing the program from the startup of your computer will not adversely affect your computer.
Results

The results of your last scan are displayed under the Results tab. Each scanned item displays the number of errors found and if the errors were cleaned or ignored. A summary of the errors found and fixed are displayed in the upper right corner.
